Record spelling variants, nicknames, dates, places, railroad names, jobs, relatives, and where each fact came from. Mark guesses as guesses.
Place each confirmed clue on a timeline. Compare census records, city directories, vital records, obituaries, newspapers, railroad publications, and family documents. A timeline helps separate people with similar names.
Search by railroad, location, job, and date range as well as by name. Read each archive's current access rules before sending private identifiers.
For every result, note the archive, collection title, box or item number, URL, access date, and what the record actually proves. Save negative searches too so work is not repeated.
Do not post Social Security numbers, exact birth dates, addresses, account numbers, or unredacted records about living people. Use an archive's private request process when sensitive details are required.
