Wyoming County's Mullens stands as one of the clearest examples in Appalachian history of a community whose entire existence flowed from a single railroad's operational need. The Virginian Railway, driven to completion between 1906 and 1909 on the strength of Henry Huttleston Rogers' personal investment of approximately $30 million, required a centrally located operations point where coal trains collecting from four different branch territories could be received, sorted, and assembled into the enormous consists that the railroad would then dispatch east toward tidewater ports near Norfolk. Mullens provided the right combination of valley floor space and directional flexibility, and the yard the Virginian built there—Elmore Yard—became one of the most operationally significant railroad facilities in the history of Appalachian heavy railroading.
Rogers combined the small Deepwater Railway in Fayette County, West Virginia, with the Tidewater Railway in Virginia to create the Virginian, building it despite the determined opposition of the Norfolk & Western and the Chesapeake & Ohio, who understood that a well-capitalized competitor would mean lower freight rates and reduced profits. The Virginian was engineered for maximum tonnage efficiency: low grades where terrain allowed, heavy rail, and terminal facilities scaled for the volume of coal that southern West Virginia's mines were producing. By 1909, when Rogers died at age 69, the railroad he had conceived was hauling coal from Deepwater to its ship-loading piers at Sewalls Point near Norfolk, covering 443 miles. Mullens and Elmore Yard were the operational heart of that system's mountain section.
Elmore Yard was positioned southwest of Mullens proper, on the relatively flat valley floor that the Virginian's engineers had identified as suitable for a major classification facility. Four branch directions radiated from the yard: north along the Guyandotte River toward Deepwater and the New River coalfields; west up the Guyandotte toward the Gilbert coalfield; northeast into the Winding Gulf—the last great "smokeless" coalfield in southern West Virginia, as the Virginian proudly marketed it; and east toward the steep ascent to Clarks Gap on the Virginia border. Each direction brought a different stream of loaded coal cars into Elmore Yard, where classification tracks allowed crews to sort inbound loads and build outbound trains for the push east.
The Virginian was known for operating some of the world's longest and heaviest coal trains—consists of 120-ton gondola cars stretching for more than a mile along the valley floor—and building those consists from the mixed traffic arriving from four branch directions required precise coordination between car inspectors, yard conductors, and the dispatchers managing car flow across the entire system. The West Virginia Encyclopedia records that the Virginian moved the world's longest and heaviest coal trains through the large rail yards at Mullens and Princeton to ship-loading facilities on the Atlantic, and the numbers behind that claim were real: the operational records of the Virginian's peak years describe a freight railroad performing at a level that attracted serious attention from railroad engineers worldwide.
The terrain east of Mullens presented the Virginian with its most demanding operational challenge. The climb from Mullens to Clarks Gap traversed rugged mountain country on grades that tested the limits of any steam locomotive in commercial service. The Virginian's roster for this territory included some of the most powerful steam engines built for American service, operated in combinations of road and helper power that pushed loaded trains toward the summit at Clarks Gap before helpers returned for the next consist.
The permanent solution came in 1925, when the Virginian inaugurated electric operation on the 134-mile section from Mullens to Roanoke, Virginia. The railroad selected 11,000 volts alternating current at 25 cycles per second—the same high-voltage AC system used by the Pennsylvania Railroad—and procured electric locomotives built by Westinghouse and Alco in configurations designed for the specific demands of mountain coal railroading. According to the West Virginia Encyclopedia, the electric trains could haul 6,000 tons of coal from Wyoming County to Clarks Gap, and trains with 9,000-ton capacity were used on the gentler grades between Clarks Gap and Roanoke. These figures were exceptional for any era of railroading; the Virginian's electrified mountain section became a benchmark cited in technical literature for decades.
The 1925 electrification made Mullens the western terminal of one of the most impressive electric railroad operations in the United States, and the town needed facilities for servicing, inspecting, and repairing the electric locomotive fleet. The Elmore Shops—the maintenance and repair complex adjacent to the yard—employed workers in locomotive overhaul, freight car repair, and general equipment servicing. At the peak of the railroad's activity, several hundred skilled workers held Virginian jobs in and around Mullens, making the railroad the dominant employer in a community whose entire modern existence had flowed from the railroad's decision to locate its mountain yard there. Princeton, the Mercer County seat to the south, was similarly transformed by Virginian shop employment, but Mullens' identity was even more completely railroad-defined, because the town had essentially no pre-railroad history to draw on.
The Virginian Railway merged with the Norfolk & Western in November 1959, ending forty years of competitive operations between the two carriers in southern West Virginia. Under N&W management, the Virginian's electrification was an early rationalization target. On June 30, 1962, the catenary between Mullens and Roanoke was de-energized and the electric locomotive fleet retired, replaced by diesel power that the N&W was standardizing across its combined system. The transition closed a chapter that railroad engineers worldwide had cited as a benchmark for heavy-grade electric freight railroading. Some electric locomotives were scrapped; others found their way into preservation.
The Norfolk & Western merged with the Southern Railway in 1982 to form Norfolk Southern, which operates through Mullens today. Coal traffic on the former Virginian main line has declined substantially from its mid-century peak, reflecting the long contraction of southern West Virginia's coal industry as seams deepened, mines mechanized, and market competition from western coalfields and natural gas reduced domestic demand. Elmore Yard continues to function, though at a fraction of its historic activity.
Mullens today preserves its railroad heritage in tangible form. A caboose on display in the town and local historical murals recall the VGN's foundational role in the community.
