The Norfolk & Western Railway's mainline from Bluefield west through McDowell County to Welch and beyond is one of the most historically significant stretches of railroad in the eastern United States—a line built not to connect cities that already existed, but to open a coalfield that would create those cities once opened, transforming a mountain wilderness into an industrial powerhouse in less than a generation. The route follows Elkhorn Creek and its tributaries through terrain so rugged that the creek valleys themselves served as the only practical corridors through the ridges. The N&W's construction engineers followed those natural guides with a precision that the track alignment retains to this day, and the communities that grew up along the grades they established—Elkhorn, Northfork, Kimball, Welch—are inseparable in their origins from the railroad that built them.
The story of this mainline begins with Frederick J. Kimball, the civil engineer and future N&W president who recognized the commercial potential of the Pocahontas coalfield in the early 1880s. The N&W at that point was a financially struggling carrier struggling to serve established Virginia markets; Kimball reorganized the company beginning in 1881 and drove its extension westward toward the coal seam that spanned the Virginia-West Virginia border. The railroad reached the Pocahontas coal deposit by 1883. The coal there—a high-grade, low-sulfur bituminous seam twelve feet thick and of exceptional quality for steam-raising—was the foundation on which the N&W's subsequent commercial dominance was built. One contemporary assessment called it a billion-dollar coalfield, and subsequent generations confirmed that the assessment, if anything, was conservative.
The Pocahontas deposit lay near the Virginia-West Virginia border, but the richest extensions of the coalfield ran westward into McDowell County, and reaching them required solving a formidable topographic problem: Flat Top Mountain rose between the N&W's existing track and the McDowell County interior with no practical surface route through it. The railroad's solution was the Coaldale Tunnel, completed in August 1888 and driven 3,014 feet through the mountain under circumstances and with consequences covered more fully in the article on the Elkhorn Tunnel elsewhere in this series. What the tunnel meant for the mainline's story is straightforward: before August 1888, the McDowell County coalfields were commercially inaccessible; after it, they were open, and the explosive growth of mining camps, railroad spurs, and town sites along Elkhorn Creek and its tributaries proceeded with a speed that contemporaries described as almost geological.
Bluefield served as the N&W's divisional headquarters and the eastern gateway to this coalfield territory throughout the railroad era. The city's growth in the 1880s and 1890s tracked the N&W's expansion directly: yards, shops, the general office building, and the administrative infrastructure of a major railroad division all concentrated there, making Bluefield one of the most thoroughly railroad-defined communities in the mid-Atlantic region. The N&W called Bluefield its "Gateway to the Coalfields," and the description was apt: virtually every ton of coal that left McDowell County on N&W rails passed through Bluefield's yard and classification facilities on its way east to tidewater ports and domestic markets.
West of Bluefield, the mainline followed the Bluestone River briefly before entering the Elkhorn Creek drainage, tracing the creek westward through a series of communities that grew in direct proportion to the density of coal mining in their surrounding hollows. Elkhorn, one of McDowell County's earliest coal communities, developed in the creek valley just west of the Coaldale Tunnel portal. Northfork, where the north and south forks of Elkhorn Creek met, became a service center and incorporated municipality. Kimball and its surrounding mining operations occupied the next segment of the creek valley, and Welch—the county seat of McDowell County—anchored the western end of the most heavily developed stretch of the mainline. Each of these communities is covered in greater depth elsewhere in this series; what unites them in the context of the mainline's story is the fact that none of them would exist in anything like their actual form without the N&W's decision to build through this corridor.
The motive power on this mainline was among the most technically impressive in American railroad history. The grades approaching and descending Flat Top Mountain, combined with the heavy loads that the coalfield's output demanded, drove the N&W to develop and procure locomotive designs that pushed the boundaries of steam technology. The railroad's Mallet compound articulated locomotives—and the subsequent Y-class compound Mallets that became the N&W's standard coal-drag motive power—were designed specifically for the sustained heavy-grade demands of this territory. The N&W maintained its steam operations longer than virtually any other major American carrier, completing the transition to diesel only around 1958 to 1960, a decision driven by the railroad's close industrial relationship with the coal it hauled and by the genuine technical excellence of its steam locomotive designs.
The passenger era on this mainline produced two of the N&W's most celebrated services. The Pocahontas, inaugurated in 1926, and the Powhatan Arrow, launched in April 1946, both served stations along the Bluefield-to-Welch corridor, connecting coalfield communities to Roanoke, Norfolk, and Cincinnati with schedules that made genuine intercity travel feasible for residents of McDowell County. Their presence on the same grades and through the same tunnels as the railroad's heaviest coal drags was a testament to the engineering quality of the line that Kimball's engineers had built: a railroad capable simultaneously of operating some of the heaviest freight trains in America and some of its most elegant passenger equipment through the same mountain terrain.
The Norfolk & Western merged with the Southern Railway in 1982 to form Norfolk Southern, and the former N&W mainline from Bluefield to Welch and beyond operates today as a core NS freight corridor. Coal movements from the mines that remain active in McDowell County continue to move east over this line, following the same grades and through the same general alignment that the N&W established in the 1880s and 1890s. The communities along the line carry the marks of the railroad's presence in their built environments, in the flat cleared ground of former yard sites, and in the overgrown grades of the spur lines that once reached into every productive hollow along the route.
